“We are at a critical juncture with our language and traditions. Our elders are passing away and our parent’s generation will be the last fluent speakers unless we act now. Of course, woven into our Gwich’in language is our entire way of being, our spirituality and connectedness to the world around us.”
The Gwich’in Steering Committee (GSC) Youth Leadership Camp Goonzhii: Living Within the Climate Change gathered a group of ten to twelve children ages 14-18 to participate in a leadership development camp in Arctic Village, AK during the week of September 2-6, 2013 with the purpose of raising self-esteem and leadership skills through meaningful cultural activities, discussion, and education on issues directly affecting their community. The camp provided youth the opportunity to participate in leadership development workshops, discover the connections between science and culture and to utilize their creativity in a traditional drum-making workshop, and the creation of a community mural project.
